Many people wonder if there is a correlation between a solar eclipse on Monday, August 21, 2017 and the return of Jesus to earth. The Bible is specific that God created the Sun and the Moon for “signs.”
Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; 15 and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. —Genesis 1:14-15
The word, “signs,” was translated from the Hebrew word, אוֹת ’ôṯ, which means a signal, beacon, monument, or evidence, in the sense of something appearing. for a specific purpose. In some translations “signs” is defined as a miracle. In other words, God created the Sun, Moon, and the Stars to distinguish seasons for days and years but also to signal that an event of supernatural origin is about to begin.
In my article: “Signs in the Heavens During Jesus’ Crucifixion,” I detail the darkness that took place during the specific moment Jesus was bearing the sins of the world as a sign from God that this darkness was orchestrated by God.
It is also important that the Feast of Trumpets, or Rosh Hashanah will begin exactly 30 days after the Total Solar Eclipse on Monday, August 21, 2017. I have written extensively regarding the likely return of Jesus for His church during the Feast of Trumpets in my article, “The Prophetic Fulfillment of the Seven Feasts of Israel by Jesus.”
There is always a possibility that any Solar Eclipse, Blood Moon, or alignment of stars at a specific time can be a “Sign” in the heavens that God is about to do something spectacular. We know that when Jesus was born in Bethlehem, there was an alignment of stars at that time that signaled to the Wise Men from the east that the King of Israel, the Messiah, was about to be born. I wrote in describing this event in my article, “The Star of Christmas: “.
It would be foolish to discount the occurrence of a spectacular Total Solar Eclipse as nothing more than an naturally occurring event. God was very specific in that He speaks to is by the things that He has made (Romans 1). He reveals His power and certain events that He will do, through the stars, which includes our Sun.
If Jesus is about to return this year during the Feast of Trumpets, Wednesday September 20-Friday September 22, 2017, then it would be reasonable that He may announce this event by the sign of a Total Solar Eclipse. We don’t know what the exact day of Jesus’ return will be but we do know that we can understand the “times and seasons.” Jesus scolded the Pharisees for being able to tell the weather by the signs in the heavens, but not the signs of His arrival as the Messiah.
Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing Him asked that He would show them a sign from heaven. He answered and said to them, “When it is evening you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red’; and in the morning, ‘It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ Hypocrites! You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times. —Matthew 16:1-3
Another interesting phenomenon that will take place, seven years after this Solar Eclipse on August 21, 2017, is the occurrence of a second Total Solar Eclipse on Apr 8, 2024. This seven year gap is most interesting. If Jesus will return for His church in 2017 during Rosh Hashanah, then this will begin The seven year Tribulation Period. Exactly seven years later, Jesus will return to earth with His church and begin His 1,000 year reign on the earth as the Messiah. During the seven year Tribulation, all the events of the Book of Revelation will take place.
This Solar Eclipse on August 21, 2017, certainly makes for interesting thoughts. We don’t know if it is a sign of Jesus’ return, but it is not something we should ignore. It is always best to be ready, for we know not when our Lord will come for us. We must be ready at any time.
